Tuesdays With The Angels-Peace Begins With Us

. PEACE BEGINS WITH US. This thought came to me in a dream and I know the angels sent it. Worrying about peace in the world troubles me. It’s  man’s inhumanity to man, all the bullying and cruelty. But this thought of Peace beginning with us flooded my mind one day when I awakened. How can I achieve this I thought? But I realized it’s just a simple statement isn’t it? I’ve been doing it always in my daily life. How I treat others is the beginning of spreading peace, change and hope.

I write books about angels, a town called Mystic Bay, where angels manifest as humans and guide and remind the townsfolk of the way to live in kindness. That’s my purpose in my own life  as I grow older, to be kind and it begins with me, it begins with all of us.

I can write stories of kindness but there is much evidence of kindnesses in our real world. We can be  the inspiration. A kind word or deed goes a long way. It spreads like the wind that blows around the world. We have the power to let peace begin with us, within our souls. This is why I write. This is my soul’s calling,  to write stories of love, redemption, forgiveness and kindness. It begins with us, the kindness that peaceful words and deeds can bring. Love always can win, and will now as we forge in our own lives making it  a more peaceful world.

Angels in Prison
Let me tell you a story about prisons and angels. The action occurred on Saturday (1-8-05) at a time when I was shrouded in the darkness of depression.
I was in an hour long line. In the sun. No breeze. I had a religious magazine with me – The Magnificat. It has daily scripture, prayers, poems and the like. I use such times to read, to pray, and meditate. This is how I survive when I am clouded by depression, sadness and anger.
After an hour of calf-aching, feet hurting meditation and prayer I looked around and observed the hundreds of men milling about. I thought, “Every one of these men has an angel.” Also, there are surely demons about as well, tempting and tormenting.
I was inspired to pray. I prayed the angels would be strengthened and the men inspired to follow their guidance. That the angels would overwhelm demonic intent to destroy those souls. I never prayed like that before, but I was satisfied I had prayed well.
Then, I had a thought that I felt was not initiated by me but was divine conversation. I felt the Holy Spirit say, “Read page 40 in your magazine.” I pulled the magazine from my pocket and on page 40 began a 3-page section on “guardian angels”: scriptures, prayers and a poem on angels.
It was an overwhelming and peculiar coincidence. I am convinced the Holy Spirit was showing me several things. 1. Those particular prayers of the magazine validated I was in the spirit as my legs ached and I prayed. 2. My feelings of depression and doubt this past week are not an indicator of my spiritual health or God’s grace on me. 3. God is often closer to us in our time of darkness than he is in the light or during times of good feelings.
It’s possible that I will always be haunted by the darkness of depression but I am learning how to succeed in these spiritual conflicts. As Padre Pio once said, “Thank and sweetly kiss the hand of God that strikes you because it is always the hand of the Father who strikes you because he loves you.
Consider Habakkuk 3: 17-19: Even though the figs trees have no fruit and no grapes grow on the vines . . . even though the sheep all die . . . I will be joyful and glad, because the Lord God is my savior.
I prayed in the darkness of mental gloom and spiritual weariness and, yet, the Holy Spirit led me in a prayer that motivated angels to work for men’s salvation. The irony of the spiritual life.

Tuesdays With The Angels- Message about Bullying From It’s A Wonderful Life Film

The film, It’s A Wonderful Life, starring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey has always been an inspiration in my work writing about angels. Written and filmed before I was born, it tells the story of how the bully and wealthiest man in town, Mr. Potter, tries to destroy  George’s life and the town. George contemplates suicide but then along comes his guardian angel, Clarence, who shows him what life would be like if he’d never been born.

It’s a  film for the ages to watch again and again. It shows  how kindness and love of family and friends can thwart a bully every time. In the end George succeeds and the town and his family come together showing what love can do.

I recently had the misfortune to meet a bully who criticized my book covers and my business card. But you know what I did?  I walked away head held high, triumphant, never stooping to the bully’s level. I stood firm, didn’t yell and my line at the end of the conversation said it all,  “I write books in memory of my late daughter because after her death years ago, I met a man I know was an angel. His kind words comforted me.”

You see, I must have my own guardian angel like Clarence watching over me all the time.  I didn’t turn into a bully myself when faced with the worst thing that could have happened to me. Instead, I made it through by writing joy and loving those in my present life. Leaving the bully behind  is a great achievement  for any of us. It is an honor for me to write stories of angels, where love abounds, and the bully never ever wins.
